Skincare is healthcare

What is cosmetic facial acupuncture?

Cosmetic facial acupuncture is a treatment that supports your skin by using a range of traditional techniques including acupuncture needles, gua sha, jade rollers and cupping therapy.  I have also chosen to enhance my facial acupuncture treatments by using a modern technique with LED light therapy.

The needles, when placed into the skin, not only use the functions of the acupuncture points to help rejuvenate the face but also create small traumas to the skin.

The natural mechanism of the skin in trauma is to create an immune response. This response sends white blood cells (leucocytes) and collagen to the area to aid repair. To read further about how acupuncture works you can read my blog post here.

Facial acupuncture creates a process of change. It doesn't provide immediate results and will take a number of treatments, depending on your main concern, to achieve results.

The beauty of facial acupuncture though is that:

  • There is no downtime i.e. you can leave an appointment with me and continue your day.

  • There is often no side effects (and if there are they are small like minor bruising or flaking of the skin)

  • You are achieving a natural change in your skin. It is creating a change in the elasticity of the skin and providing new structures and strength. This means we can work on lasting changes.

  • You are having your root cause treated with body acupuncture points. These are based on your overall constitution, health and diagnosis. So you will probably find for example that not only does your skin improve, but your sleep might also improve (or your bloating, or your period pains)

What happens in a cosmetic facial acupuncture treatment?

In a cosmetic facial acupuncture treatment with me, I will use a range of traditional and modern methods to work with your skin to create the changes you would like to see.

Acupuncture Needles

I use two varieties of needle in a facial acupuncture treatment.  Intradermal needles, which are so small you can hardly see them (they are the two very tiny silver needles in the picture, below the jade roller). These smaller needles are placed into specific acupuncture points, which all aid the improvement of the skin.

The larger needles are used to stimulate the lymphatic system, which aids the drainage of waste from cells. They are also part of the immune response.

In the first treatment we evaluate your skin's response to the needles and also starting to rehydrate the skin.

In later treatments, we will start to work on your main concern and more needles and modalities will start to be used.

Acupuncture needles are a brilliant way of:

  • Creating a micro-trauma which in turn produces an inflammatory response.  This response sends white blood cells to the site of trauma and allows for regeneration of the cells.

  • They are able to reach the dermis, which houses collagen.  Collagen is responsible for maintaining structure to the skin and elasticity

I use silicone facial cups to support my treatments. The cups create microtrauma (without puncturing the skin like needles) and improve elasticity, blood circulation and help the lymphatic system.

Gua sha for the face is slightly different in that we are not seeking to create a "sha" on the skin. However, the treatment principle remains. We want to improve the circulation of the blood and lymphatic system.

Jade rolling is also used similarly to above. It helps with the absorption of products, plus also helping with fine lines and cooling the face.

Face reading

Face reading was used in China to diagnose illness. Practitioners would observe small signs on the face to determine the health of the patient both externally and internally and any emotional issues that they were currently (or historically) going through.

I also use face reading, using different areas of the face to relate to different organs and problems. As you can see from the diagram below these are some of the issues we can see from the face. I can then use this as part of mydiagnosis.

  • Puffiness under the eyes: Kidney deficiency

  • Double chin: enjoys food and comfort but ultimately works against the Spleen's ability to hold the muscles tight.

  • Droopiness of the eyelids: Spleen deficiency

  • Wrinkles on the cheek: grief

Celluma

Alongside the traditional methods I use in facial acupuncture, I also use a modern technique using LED light therapy.

I use a Celluma LED light system which can be used for acne, wrinkles and pain.  The light therapy uses red, blue and near infrared lights to extend to depths of the skin.  In doing so they activate certain cells.

LED light therapy colours and depths
The cells activated by light therapy
  • Blue light which has a depth of 465mm will be used for acne and for killing the bacteria which causes the pustules

  • Red light has a depth of 640mm and can be used to help with the production of collagen, skin clarity, tone and texture.  It also helps to manage inflammatory reactions.
