In a Cochrane review of 7104 participants, they found that acupuncture:

  • manual (and electro‐) may moderately reduce the severity of depression by end of treatment

  • associated with a small reduction in the severity of depression of 1.69 points on the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) by end of treatment 

  • acupuncture and medication is highly beneficial in reducing the severity of depression by end of treatment

  • may confer small benefit in reducing the severity of depression by end of treatment, versus medication

A systematic review published in 2018 found that all 13 included studies for acupuncture and anxiety “reported an anxiety decrease for their treatment group relative to the control groups.”


In a 2020 Randomised Controlled Trial they "demonstrated the feasibility of the acupuncture in persons with increased stress levels"


An RCT of fifty-five service members found that acupuncture was effective for reducing PTSD symptoms and also associated with significantly greater improvements in depression, pain, and physical and mental health functioning
